Every school day, a team of 90 people
prepares meals and organizes their distribution and service in 17 schools in Southwest Montreal.
Dieticians, cooks, drivers, delivery
people, servers and lunch-time supervisors start work at the break of dawn to
make that pupils are served hot, well-balanced lunches.
Particular attention is paid to putting
together menus. Dieticians are put to the test trying to provide healthy meals
that meet the requirements established by local school boards and by Health Canada.
In all, 2,700 meals are prepared and served
to children by the staff of the Garde-Manger every school day. Everyone’s goal
to make sure each child served is able learn optimally on a full stomach.
Success in school is only possible when children are fed healthy meals on a
regular basis.
The Garde-Manger Pour Tous works together
with the Commission scolaire de Montréal and with the Commission scolaire
Marguerite Bourgeoys to ensure that every schoolchild has access to healthy
food served in conditions which guarantee personal dignity and social equality.
The School Lunch Program was launched by the Garde-Manger in 1990 at the request of the Direction de la Petite-Bourgogne.
